Players keep moving after releasing W key
On some of our PC's, the students find that their characters keep walking for for around 5-10 seconds after they release the W key. it seems to occur on different computers at random. I thought it might be a network issue, but it happens even when playing on single player. I've lowered all the graphics settings to their lowest, despite the PC's being more than capable spec to play the game at high settings, but it doesn't seem to solve the issue. I've checked its not sticky keys, or a keyboard fault. Has anyone else experienced this issue? and have they found a solution?

Go to setiing and click on toggle sprint

Did the toggling of the sprint help at all?

Yeah I've had the same bug happen to me, i had to tap the whichever direction key i was heading in a couple of times and it would stop the player moving

I can't find a toggle sprint setting in Education edition. I know it's in the accessibility settings in other versions of Minecraft, but it doesn't seem to be there in EE.
I've tried pressing the the direction key to stop moving and it doesn't seem to have any effect.
One thing i have noticed is that it doesn't happen when using the touchscreen controls, only with the keyboard input. Unfortunately using the touchscreen controls on 24" screens isn't practical.

This has been a persistent issue on macOS (the only system I used for playing) for the last 2 years. I never did any extensive testing and blamed multiplayer for it. I always solved it by tapping the "frozen" direction key one or two times.
Now, with your report of occurrence during single player, I do suspect a bug.1 -
Thank you all for bringing this to our attention and providing the great info. I will elevate this to the team and try and get a bug report made on this.

All our PCs are using Windows 10, so if it is the same issue it doesn't seem to be platform specific. Unfortunately, I've tried tapping the frozen direction key to stop it, which is the only advice I've been able to find online, but this doesn't seem to work in our case, so it may not be the same issue.
After a bit of testing, I've noticed that if it starts moving on it's own, as soon as i touch the touchscreen, it stops walking, and i can move around freely again using the touchscreen controls. But if i then touch any keyboard key again, it resumes walking forward again for several seconds. Given this, it's possible this is a hardware/USB issue. We use HP EliteOne All-in-one PCs.

I'm having a similar problem. Player keeps moving for several seconds even after releasing "W", and in general, all movement controls behave the same way (strafe, back, up down, etc). I've done some research on this and discovered that the more exploration you do in your world, the larger the file is and the more "sluggish" your controls get.
There seems to be software available to reset "chunks" (areas of 16 x 16 blocks) in your world to their original state before you explored or altered them (ex: MCA Editor seems to be the most popular tool for resetting MC chunks: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=LgSRMJVszSk). This appears to resolve the problem for other editions of MC, but the software doesn't appear to work with MEE, and there doesn't appear to exist any similar software designed for MEE.
Is there a way to reset chunks in EE?
Is there an alternate way to resolve the problem without resetting chunks?
I tried to follow the suggestion above (toggle Sprint), but I can't find anything like that in the settings.

This has been an issue since subscribing to (Mac version) Minecraft Edu. Just double press whatever direction button the character is moving. It's like an auto-run and very annoying, especially with younger children.

Thank you for the suggestion Paul Hudson, however the issue I'm experiencing doesn't appear to be related to the Mac version. I strongly suspect it is about the large file size that results from extensive amounts of exploration of the world, because the controls are truly sluggish (slow to respond), and the severity of the problem increased in relation to the amount of exploration I've done.
When I double press a direction, it only causes my avatar to run instead of walk. It doesn't stop "auto-run" as you suggested. When I release the direction key, my character keeps moving for several seconds and then stops on its own without double pressing anything.

I managed to resolve my issue. It turns out it was our safeguarding software, Smoothwall Monitor, which was causing the problem. It has a built in keylogger which essentially intercepts the keyboard signal, so if a key is held down it receives multiple key presses at once, which it can't process them in time so it creates a backlog. And when you release the key it's still processing the backlog. I notified Smoothwall and they fixed the issue with an update.
