    Hey there!

Sorry to hear you are running into some issues with this setting. I have not heard recently of others with this exact issue. Just had a few questions to help us support you further:

1 - What devices / OS versions have you seen this on? Just iPads?

2 - How many devices are running into this?

3 - Have things worked previously?

4 - Does the issue replicate when connecting from another Wifi Network?

    Hi Danny,

    Thanks for responding.

1 - What devices / OS versions have you seen this on? Just iPads?
Correct, just iPAds. All the iPAds are the same model (9th Gen) and the version of minecraft currently on the iPads is 1.21.93.1

2 - How many devices are running into this?
We have a class set of 30 and pretty much all of the devices exhibit the symptoms at one stage or another.

3 - Have things worked previously?
No, this has been going on for quite some time.

4 - Does the issue replicate when connecting from another Wifi Network?
Yes, it's a permission issue on the iPads, not a wifi/network issue.

    Hey Shane,
    Thanks for the information!

Is this a shared iPad with multiple people signing in and out of the Minecraft Education app?
On IOS, the permission is per Microsoft Account and will need to be approved by each user. You may be able to override this via configuration management (like JAMF or similar) if you use it.

Let us know if you have any additional questions, or concerns!
    Thank you!

    Hi Kaleb,

I had suspected this. Are you able to shed some light on the configuration processing using JAMF to configure that particular setting? It's a little frustrating for our digitech teacher to have to constantly change this setting to get MCE to allow multiplayer when trying to run a class and cover content.

This wasn't a problem until about half way through this year. Even then, it wasn't as bad as it is now.

    Thanks,

    Shane.

    Hey Shane Crilly
Unfortunately, I'm not familiar enough with JAMF to provide specific configuration.
Upon further research, it looks like it may not even be 100% possible as Apple may require the end user be the one to configure privacy options. I'm not certain however. I would recommend reaching out to Apple or JAMF support for complex support on this.

We're having this problem in our school district as well. And this has become more of a problem ever since the recent major update in the summer of 2025.

Before the summer update, turning on the local network setting on an iPad kept that setting on for all users. Something changed with the update this summer and we're having more issues with the local network setting now. Another annoying issue is that if ONE iPad has the local network setting turned off, that iPad will crash the entire world for EVERYONE when it tires to join the hosted world. Why can't this bug be fixed? If an iPad has the local network setting turned off, then it shouldn't crash the world for everyone...it should just prevent that iPad from joining the world. This is really frustrating for students and teachers, and I spend so much time trying to troubleshoot this problem across our district.

    Hey there Gareth,

Sorry you are running into this as well, I totally understand the frustrations. Just had some similar questions for you as for the users above.

Just had a few questions to help us support you further:

1 - Just iPads running into this issue, other devices working as expected?

2 - How many total devices / users are running into this?

3 - Have things worked previously? You said it has been more of an issue since the most recent update, did things ever work perfectly previously?

4 - Does the issue replicate when connecting from another Wifi Network?

The local network issue on iPads has been a problem for several years (i.e. if an iPad has the local network setting turned off, it crashes the whole world for everyone whenever it tries to join a hosted world). It's an annoying bug, but we've learned to deal with it by checking every single iPad and making sure that the local network setting is turned on....until this summer :(

Since the latest summer update, checking every iPad doesn't always solve the problem. Sometimes all of the iPads have the local network setting turned on and the world still crashes. We're using the same iPads that we used last year, the only variables that have changed are the updated iPad app and possibly the new version of iPadOS. Everything else is the same (the network, the devices, the school, etc.)

    1. Yes, this seems to affect iPads the most. I haven't had any problems with laptops this year.

    2. It's hard to say how many devices. I'm a district helping teacher and I try to help everyone in our district with hosting issues. I've experienced it with many classes and also heard reports from many teachers (teachers who are experienced with teaching with Minecraft and hosting).

    3. Yes, this worked fine last year (once we double-checked all the iPads in the room). Now, crashing happens even after we've checked all of the iPads.

    4. We only use 1 wifi network, and we used this same network last year.
