Minecraft Education not working with Sequoia
I recently updated my iMacs to Sequoia and have been getting tons of issues accessing Minecraft Education. I've gotten everything from the screen freezing on the opening page to the Sign In button not working to Minecraft opening on a background tab and then freezing. I've also had the log in screen show up completely white and after the students enter their credentials, the screen freezing as well. I've tried updating Minecraft to the latest version 1.21.06. I've tried doing a complete reinstall. Nothing seems to work. Any suggestions?

Hey there!
Sorry to hear you are running into some issues with Mac and Minecraft Education.
You noticed this just when it updated to Sequoia?
Have things worked just fine prior?
How many users do you know with these issues as well?
Is it all login related issues?
0 -
It was happening randomly before the update it is happening on most of the computers and much more frequently since. When the students are able to log in, many times it will freeze shortly after as well. I don't know if there is some sort of conflict with the NYCDOE filters or if anyone else is having this problem running Minecraft on Macs but it is very inconvenient. I also do work after school at a different DOE school that also updated to Sequoia and they are having the same issues.

Hey there,
Gotcha, thanks for the info. Sorry for the inconvenience and thanks for the patience on this.
Could you please share the full device specs RAM/ CPU/ Storage Space/ GPU of the device?
Also, if you are willing I can create a ticket for us and if you are able send us a video reproduction of the issue so we can share with the test team?

The computers are all iMacs, model#MQRK3LL/A with Apple M3 Chips, 8GB of memory and over 400GB of storage available.
Here is a link to a video I took showing multiple log in issues. In none of the attempts was I able to log in. It also shows how after freezing and force quitting, Minecraft will open in a separate tab.

Hey Adam!
Thanks for the link and info, it does look like someone else from NYC sent us a very similar video / issue that we are looking into as well.
So no issues with previous Os's, correct?0 -
There were random issues in the past but they usually were resolved by force quitting and reopening Minecraft which does not work anymore since the updates.

Happy New Year. I'm wondering if there are any updates to all the issues people have been having with Minecraft and Sequoia through the New York City Board of Education.

Happy New Year!
No big updates I am afraid. Something you could test if available would be to back up one of your Mac Sequoia devices, and fully factory reset it to see if that solves any of the issues.

I have a m1max Laptop and the same problems with freezing and not logging in also on sequoia, my wife has a macbok air m1 with sonoma running, there it works totally fine, so i'm pretty sure it has something to do with the os running, sonoma and prior all works fine, sequoia minecraft education just freezes. i used terminal to start minecraft and this is the "error" i get

Hey there,
Sorry to hear you are running into some issues with Minecraft Education and Sequoia.
Can you give our Preview / Beta version a go and let us know how it works for you?

Hi Danny - having the same problem here as the folks above, I was going to use Minecraft Education with my 50 University of Illinois students next week for an activity and assignment, over half of them have Apple Silicon macs. I'm running an M3 Pro on Sequoia (plenty of drive space, Gigabit internet, used to work, apps allowed from everywhere) and get freeze problems after login via SSO authentication and 2FA. The usual tricks (force-quit + restart, delete cache, timezone, VPN) don't seem to work.
I'd try the preview but it looks like it's only available for Windows (still working fine with the UIUC SSO login of course, I did check), Android and Chromebook currently.0 -
Some additional troubleshooting:
Tried the signature replacement fix from this thread: https://edusupport.minecraft.net/hc/en-us/community/posts/29066176455956-Minecraft-Edu-1-21-03-Mac-Open-Error
(open application directory > Contents > Terminal window in MacOS > "codesign -s - -f /Applications/minecraft-edu.app/Contents/MacOS/minecraft-edu") and the first time it said replacing existing signature, future attempts said operation not permitted despite sudo.In Sequoia Keychain is hidden (replaced by a passwords app; find it at System > Library > CoreServices > Applications), the PF_Account keys still appeared in mine from previous versions, along with com.microsoft.oneauth and AD_EDU; I deleted them. After both of these things upon launch it asked about keychains for half a dozen items, it just recreates anything I delete and still freezes after getting past the 2FA login. I then repeated the process another time but uninstalling the game and deleting preferences and application support folders under library and the game just freezes upon launch or after I type in my email for the SSO login.

Hey Jeff,
MacOS lives in our Minecraft Education Beta program. Its the same as the preview, except it overrides your existing install. We believe we know what the core-issue is and have heard great success in this beta build. However, we don't currently have an ETA for when the full release will be out for it.
Let us know if you have any additional questions, or concerns!
Thank you!0 -
Got the beta working in under 2 minutes. It'll work for my class. Thank you so much!

Perfect, great to hear Jeff! Thanks for sharing!

I actually installed the Beta on 30 school computers running Sequoia. At first all looked good. Everything loaded quickly and students were able to log in with on problem. Then, a couple days later, it seems that the whole app was wiped off the computer. I can no longer even open the app. I don't know whether this is an NYCDOE thing where they auto wiped some files or if this is a compatibility issue. Has anyone else had this problem and if so, what can I do to resolve it. I don't mind using the Beta version if it will allow my students to log in and get on Minecraft but not if I have to reinstall it consistantly.
