Code tutorial loading really slow
Hello!
We have Windows laptops within the required specifications and generally the app runs no problem. The code builder is a bit slow which can be frustrating but the real problem is that code builder tutorials need a long time to load. We have fast internet so that is not the problem. The result is that each coding part of a challange takes a long time to load up which is really making it almost unusable. To summarise:
- We have already set the graphics settings to low settings to improve performance
- When we get to a new part where coding is required we press the c button
- The Code window opens and we see 'starting tutorial', this takes a long time
- Then the 'loading blocks' part takes a long time
- Then we can start
- Subsequent opening of the code tab works fine because the tutorial is already loaded
Any help would be appreciated.
As a general observation:
- Including the Makcode editor inside Minecraft Education seems a good idea and I can understand that this is easy to use
- From a performance point of view it seems a really bad choice on anything without a dedicated graphics card which in our setting is something that is very unlikely
- The old code connection approach worked absolutely great
- Our kids are already used to the MakeCode website and combining the two seems the obvious choice
- I understand that support the code connection for the official version of Minecraft was difficult and the connector app was dropped
- But why not (optionally) build a code connection tool to allow the use of the MakeCode website with the Minecraft Education edition? This I think would be much more userfriendly and solve the performance issues the integrated approach clearly has
Thanks!
Michael

Hey there!
Sorry to hear you are running into some issues with Code Builder.
Could you please share the device specs RAM/ CPU/ Storage Space/ GPU of the device? Just so we can take a look and compare as well.
How many users are running into this issue?

I've run into this before, Michael Poelzl. It's an issue with the cache in Minecraft. Here are instructions to clear it from a PC:
Follow these steps to clear your cache from the system files of your Windows PC.
- Close Minecraft: Education Edition.
-
Open File Explorer and navigate to C:\Users\USERNAME\AppData\Local\Temp.
Note: “USERNAME” refers to the user account used to log in to the device, not the sign in for Minecraft: Education - Locate the minecraftpe folder
-
Rename or delete the folder.
Note: Alternatively you can - Relaunch Minecraft: Education Edition.

Hello!
Thanks for the answers. I tried the cache deletion but unfortunately this did not help. The specs are:
- Intel i5-7300
- 8GB RAM
- Intel HD Graphics 620
The game graphic settings are all turned down. Once the code window is opened the CPU is up to 100%. The Windows Desktop manager is also up to 10 or 15% when the code window is open...
Any ideas?
Thanks,
Michael

Hey there,
Thanks for the info, sorry to hear that the cache deletion did not work.
Do you know anyone else running into this issue?
Are you able to test if the world works on another machine, perhaps one with an i7 processor?

The more I think about this, the more I think it's some localized throttling that's going on while the worlds are being downloaded, rather than a computer performance issue.
I have an old HP laptop here, Core2Duo processor, 4 GB ram, onboard graphics, and it runs activities fine and typically downloads the bigger worlds within 30-45 seconds. The longest I've seen is about a minute.
I'm wondering if there's some sort of filter that your IT dept is running? Might be worth talking to them about it.0 -
Okay, we had this problem come up randomly, and I don't know exactly what fixed it , but these are the desperation things we tried, and eventually it stopped. (No promises, but I hope something resets it for you.)
We tried leaving Minecraft, Restarting, Opening a brand new world, resetting the coding window, then leaving, then going back in the new world, and new code seemed to work. So then we tried to go back into the previous world. reset code builder again, and tried to code again.
As I recall, it worked at least sometimes.
This is what we called the "brute force method" in the old days. =] Everything but the kitchen sink. *shrugs* Hope something works.
