P2P/SIG: Error Code: -2147012894
Hi all,
An external club is coming in to use our school facilities and are requesting Minecraft Education and Classroom for Minecraft. We're using Windows 10 (21H2) and both applications are installed via the EXE and MSI, not through MS Store. The version of game I'm using is v1.20.13.
Whenever I go to 'Host' a game, the world will build but about 5/10 seconds after, the game will close and say 'Unable to connect. P2P/SIG: Error Code: -2147012894'.
Any ideas?
Thanks

Hmm, I haven't seen that code yet. Would you mind sending a screenshot of it?
Also, are you able to connect via a separate network such as a mobile hotspot?0 -
Morning,
Naturally haha! See attached a screenshot of the error code. On my computer and on my colleagues computer (IT aren't filtered like the rest of the school) this works fine (which I assume is the same as hotspotting).

It sounds like something on the network is blocking one of our service's URLs.
Have IT make sure that all of the URLs in this article have been allow listed on all firewalls, content filters, proxy, etc: https://educommunity.minecraft.net/hc/en-us/articles/360047118992-FAQ-IT-Admin-Guide-0 -
Thanks Ernie.
I'm the IT Manager so I'll add these URLs and test it again later on and get back to you.

Ahh, apologies, I see that you are IT in your previous response now.
But that sounds like a plan. Let me know how things go.0 -
Hi Ernie - I add all those URLs however still getting the same error.
I haven't tried the ports yet though. Will try that now but thought I'd update this thread.

Thanks for the updates!
Let us know how the ports go :)

It seems as what Ernie is saying is probably accurate. What filtering do you use? Just a firewall or do you have another filter? We use Fortinet and Aristotle, so at any time it could be one or the other.

Morning all,
Still no luck - Added all the URLs and ports.
We use Smoothwall as our filter and pfSense as our firewall.

I know this might seem like a redundant question, but have you added the URLs to the firewall and the content filter?
If so, we may need to move this conversation to a ticket so you can share a pcap with us.0 -
that same thing happend to me

can you also help me please it said my friends world did not exist

Hey Gabi,
Could you share a screenshot of your error?
Are you able to connect to other users, or are they able to connect to you?
Also, make sure you are both on the same version of Minecraft Education.0 -
I have the same issue at our school. We are also using Smoothwall.
URLs have been added and I've followed the settings for the firewall.
Smoothwall doesn't allow wildcards so I had to find the full URLs (as below).
Maybe I'm still missing some?https://*.minecrafteduservices.com

Another Smoothwall Filtering customer having the same issue with access to other worlds here, had anyone made any progress on this either with Minecraft or Smoothwall?
Thanks
Guy

Hey there!
Sorry to hear you are running into some issues with Smoothwall.
Just wanted to confirm all URL's from this page are allowlisted including the wild card domains?
URLs Used by Minecraft Education – Minecraft Education0 -
Yes, all entered as top level domains, I'm actually wondering if this issue is Windows Firewall for the P2P?

Hey Guy,
It is entirely possible that P2P is blocked by Windows Firewall, or even on Smoothwall. You could try disabling Windows Firewall temporarily as a test. The program should make a few rules by default you should also make sure are enabled.
I've also had a couple Smoothwall customers that have had to follow this article to allow WebSockets:

Thanks,

Thanks Caleb, do you know if it is specific domains on the list of used URLs (the ones marked Multiplayer perhaps?) I would rather not put the whole thing into Do Not Inspect if I can avoid it
Thanks
Guy

Hey Guy O'Malley,
Unfortunately, I'm not 100% sure what they added to make it work. This is a Smoothwall specific process, so our knowledge is a little limited.
However, I would imagine you'd only need to add the following as these are what are used for authentication and multiplayer:https://*.minecrafteduservices.com
Login/Multiplayer/Coding
Login
https://*.minecraft-services.net/ Multiplayer/Library
I would also add our STUN and TURN URLS:
turn.azure.com
world.relay.skype.com
(These ones are found in this guide: FAQ: IT Admin Guide – Minecraft Education)
However, if those alone don't work, I would recommend adding all of them, seeing it that works, and then slowly removing them from that list to see until it doesn't work anymore.Let us know if you have any additional questions, or concerns!
Thanks,

I work within the school IT sector. At a few of my schools we are also having the same problem and it seems to only be with the current version of Minecraft. Schools I manage dont have Smoothwall and when we use a hotspot, the two devices can connect fine. On the education WAN they seem to get this error when trying to connect to each other's games. I've tested on the Minecraft preview edition which is currently running 1.20.70 and the problem is no longer occurring so whatever is going on, IMO, is limited to the current 1.20.13 version. Maybe its just networks that have any kind of filtering? The schools have all URL's unblocked and have for years now as they all run it within the class setting and have never had this issue and it's only been recently since about the 26th of Mar.

Hey there,
Sorry to hear you are running into some issues with the P2P error, thanks for sharing all that you noticed and tried. Interesting the Preview build works well in comparison. Are you able to get all the devices on the preview build?
It does seem related to the filtering for sure, sounds like even if all the URLs are unblocked from this guide. FAQ: IT Admin Guide – Minecraft Education Does your filtering allow for allowlisting the wildcard domains?

Hi Danny,
Sorry for the delayed reply - ive been compiling some testing documentation. As mentioned, I work within school IT environments for the department of Education.
In the schools I work within, there are currently 2 different setups for internet access. One uses an Eduproxy (squid proxy)/ Netspace iinet connection and the other uses Zscaler filtering on a Telstra Direct internet feed.
From my testing, the clients on the zscaler/telstra direct connection are not having this problem and hosting/joining works finr. But any of my schools on the Eduproxy/netspace connection are having the issue. Checking the eduproxy logs of the machines with these problems, there is no internet request being captured to analyse because there is no request sent to the proxy. Its going straight out - whatever the URL is.
We never used to have this problem with the older versions, but I know that since the release of 1.20.13 you have changed some of the internal Multiplayer aspects relating to joining and hosting games. Whether this has had this affect we are seeing or not is unsure, but as I mentioned previously, it was working on older versions without issues, so filtering was fine. And now it is not maybe?
Hopefully this can help with troubleshooting the issues.0 -
Hey Troy,
Sounds like there may be a lot of variables going on here.
I think a good place to start would be to make this into a ticket, and maybe see if we can get a full network trace going.
I'll go ahead and submit a ticket for you, and we can continue there! That way we can work closer together without making any sensitive data public :)
See you over there!
