p2p/sig: no_session(Empty Auth from Discovery) when attempting to join my own local host

I have two students on ipads. I am hosting on pc. we are all using the same version 1.20.12. our time and date are synced. previously we have been able to host just fine for many weeks, in fact we were playing together last night.

but tonight we keep getting: p2p/sig: no_session(Empty Auth from Discovery)

we have restarted all computers, we have logged out and logged back in of minecraft, done our microsoft authentication, only to get the same result. we have tried switching so a student hosts and we join. with the same result. 

can anyone help? is this a microsoft thing that's temporary?
