    Hey there,

Sorry to hear you are running into some issues.

Are you referring to Minecraft Education or Java or Bedrock?

This is a Minecraft Education forums, and by the sounds of your inquiry it seems to me you are referring to a different version of Minecraft.

Minecraft Education requires login to play, so your son would not be able to play Minecraft Education without logging in, unless they have only playing on the extremely limited demo version.

Secondly, Minecraft Education should never display a profile picture prompt when logging into the game itself.

If you would like to login to Minecraft Education, you would need to purchase a commercial license, more info here: https://educommunity.minecraft.net/hc/en-us/articles/360061369812-Purchase-Commercial-Licenses

Please keep in mind - Your son and his friends would need to be on the same domain name. That is to say, it sounds like his friends have existing accounts somewhere, and for him to play with them, even if he purchases a license using the above link, multiplayer will be disabled with them as they would not be on the same tenant.

For them to play multiplayer either he would need to have a license in their group, or you would need to purchase a license for each of the friends as well.  It is a security feature to keep unwanted users out of students games.
