Automatic Update PC

Hi, I have searched through the community but can't find anything that relates directly, apologies if the following has been answered elsewhere.

Is the automatic update for PC versions a phased rollout? (to minimise load on the file server maybe?) Or should it have just auto-updated on first log-in after the update went live?

Reason I ask, my PC updated about a week ago (I think) but my son's PC is still running 1.18.45. Both are running Win10.

I tried downloading and installing the 1.19.52 exe file, thinking maybe it would see 1.18 is still installed and prompt me for an update, but no(I should've known this would make way too much sense), it doesn't get far before there is an error message and it closes itself.

I looked around within 1.18 settings etc to see if there's a way to update from within (again, this would make too much sense, can't have that can we)

I then tried installing thru Windows Store but that comes up with a login error. I assume because 1.18 is still installed.

I understand I'm probably going to need to uninstall 1.18 first, but my son has literally hundreds of worlds and I can't seem to find any way to export/import them en-masse (I am NOT exporting/importing them all one-by-one!)

This all seems very two-decades ago way of manually updating....

  There's no phased rollouts. 

  As for the Windows Store login error, feel free to add a screenshot. (without personal info) My hunch is that there are more than 1 version of Minecraft Education installed on the device.

  Idk what your situation is like, but on my computer at home, and on our networks at school these factors play into MC not being updated:

  • inadequate permissions on the account (need admin account to actually install, or access the download location)
  • problems adequately deleting the previous versions due to permissions or interruption
  • lack of storage space for the installer
  • automatic Windows updates usurping the queue and generally upsetting World Peace until the update finishes (which generally speaking requires a power source for the entire time.)
  • sun spots, trolls, I digress lol
  • undetected windows permissions windows (you know, those little shield windows that want you to say "okay" a bunch of time to pop up messages? It's easy to miss them and boy have they caused me trouble!)

  I finally got it to work though, albeit very round-about and manually.
  I now have one very happy birthday boy, though I missed getting it sorted by one day...

  In case anyone else has a similar/same update issue and finds this post:

  The 1.18.45 auto-updater was very broken. (Hopefully the new 1.19.52 updater will be fine!)
  Forcing it through the task scheduler didn't work, just got an error message.

  I tried manually downloading and installing the 1.19.52 installer exe, again, hoping maybe my first download of the file was corrupted, but no, same behavior: got a few seconds into installation before throwing an error message about not being able to write to a windows system folder with an msi file(C:/ProgramData/ etc etc).... aha! I went in to that hidden system folder and deleted everything related to Minecraft, including the auto downloaded 1.19.52 installer exe.
  I then went back to the 1.18.45 Minecraft folder (C:/Program Filesx86/ etc etc) and ran the updater exe there, which re-downloaded the 1GB 1.19.52 installer, then when done, it ran the installation then... failed.
  
  I ended up finding a Minecraft Updater log file in a hidden system folder, I read through that and apparently on the 12th of April the 1.18.45 updater had downloaded a new updater, which then subsequently installed and got invoked with a new entry into the log file but then that updater failed. Subsequent log entries all had failed messages, so something got broken on the 12th April.

  I then got the idea to maybe not use the updater exe at all, delete all the install/updater content in the hidden folder (C:/ProgramData/ etc etc) again but this time try running the freshly downloaded(yet again) 1GB large 1.19.52 installer exe again and..... this time things got further, it mentioned removing files, never did that before, then updating registry etc, all looking very good, then, success!! Finally.

  I'd like all those hours I wasted back please Microsoft. No, really.
  It's 2023, it shouldn't be this hard. Every other software I've used for decades you go to Help, then About and click check for updates... nice and simple.
