Cannot place blocks outside world error
-
Thanks Aleece,
There're lots of things I don't know about Minecraft!
So, I'm loving the 'learn something new every day' approach that I'm getting from this.
You're never too old to learn something new. :D
The ticking area would be a good work around, when I figure it out.
Working out the coordinates when you are standing in the middle might be a bit trickier!
Thanks again for the help.
Does anyone know if this is likely to be resolved soon?

This sounds like a recent bug that occurred with the new update. We are trying to fix that hole in the client build to resolve it. If others have ideas though, please post to see if we can find a workaround.

Hello,
This thread seems to be from a year ago, but I am just running into this problem on the latest update.
Definitely the same problem, not too large a fill, just can't place blocks outside world.
Is there a work around?
Thanks

Hey there,
Sorry to hear you are running into some issues with filling.
How big of an area are you trying to fill?
What is your device and OS version?
Do you know others with this issue as well?

I've encountered this as well.
/fill and /clone since the 1.19 update no longer seem to work if you're covering an area outside of the ticking area you're in.
I suspect this is carried over from Bedrock.
I've gotten around it with using Amulet for large fills, and structure blocks for cloning.
Unfortunately, with /fill in game you may just have to do smaller areas at a time.

Thanks Dani,
I will give that a go for myself, but still need a fix for the children.
We are a primary school.
We won't have permission to put Amulet on all the computers.
It rather reduces the functionally of the /fill command, sadly.

Create a ticking area that covers where the players are plus the area you are trying to fill.
OR
Move to so that you are above or below the center of the area to fill. For instance if you want to fill a 66 by 66 block area with allow blocks, you can't do it from the corner /fill ~ ~ ~ ~66 ~ ~66 allow without expanding the ticking area, you have to do it from above the middle. So like /fill ~-33 ~-3 ~-33 ~33 ~-3 ~33 allow.0 -
Ben Wooding
Figuring out the coordinates you need for your ticking area are not too hard if you were able to figure out the coordinates of what you are trying to fill. Just make sure the ticking area is bigger. If you are dealing with a really huge area, you might need more than one ticking area.
You can use relative coordinates like ~ ~ ~ ~100 ~ ~100 when setting the ticking area. You don't need to worry about the y coordinate though, ticking area goes full height no matter what number you put in the middle.0 -
Sorry, I'm not sure I made myself clear.
I don't have a problem with working the coordinates out, but I am not sure the children will.
Thanks for the help though.
Anyone know if this will be resolved soon?

Hi Ben Wooding,
This change is behaviour for the /fill command came through from the Bedrock Edition (on which Education is based), so it would be up to the Bedrock team to sort it out.
You can see a bug report on the Mojang site here.
It was posted at least 2 versions ago, so I suspect it's not high on the list of priorities, unfortunately.

I'll start whinging there instead then! :D

What level are the students? How are you having them do the fill commands? Is it using the agent or are they typing in chat to do it? Are they in separate worlds or is this in a multiplayer world that you have hosted for them?
I don't think I would hold my breath for the "bug" to be fixed since it may be that they intended it that way.
Creating a ticking area is likely your best bet
/tickingarea add x y z x y x name Or /tickingarea add x y z radius name
Either set it up if you are hosting multiplayer Or give the students the command to use in their worlds if individual.
However, depending on their age/level, having them figure out the math and coordinates where they need to be to create a a large fill might be a good exercise. Though if your subject has nothing to do with math/science/computer science or the students too young, I can understand not wanting to take on that lesson. However, since you are teaching using fill commands, figuring out coordinates and using relative coordinates and figuring out the command from the middle instead of the corner or using the exact coordinates (using pencil and paper to write them down first) if you need things to line up perfectly in the world. (I know, not always the easiest thing to get students to do when faced with the in game environment.)0 -
Hello Aleece,
We're a primary school, so up to 11 year olds.
The ticking area looks like the easiest work around.
They should be able to set a fill area from their own position.
Thanks

I’ve also had this issue. Thanks Aleece!
