I can’t access the new 1.18 edition

I was trying to join my friend but I had realised she is at 1.18 and I was still on 1.17. Can someone please help me? Ever since 1.18 got released we can’t join each other’s world. Please help.

  Are you able to download and install 1.18 manually?  (If you're doing this step, make sure you export all the worlds you want to keep into a backup folder, just in case).  https://education.minecraft.net/en-us/get-started/download
