Disable Chat for all Students
Hello,
We have been testing Minecraft Education Edition from the Microsoft store but see that students will be able to chat back and forth. I know that a teacher can turn off chat if they are in classroom mode but we would like to disable it for all students all of the time regardless of the world that they are in. I saw a forum post that we could ask technical support to disable this.
Is there a way to turn off chat, in Minecraft EE, for all students regardless of the world that they are in?

I have never done that, but yes, it was referenced in that old post. Penny?
But just so everyone is clear-eyed on this, turning off chat will not prevent students from communicating with each other. Minecraft has books and boards and signs, and they can all be written in/on.

Yes, chat can be turned off across the entire tenant. If you would like to do this, open a support request and the team can help you out: https://aka.ms/MEE_New_Request

If we have chat turned off, will students be able to use local commands for spawning, clearing blocks where they are etc.?

Disabling chat for a tenant does not hide the chat window. The following statements are true when chat is disabled:
- A player can see any text they themselves write and send
- A player can see text that they sent via the /tell, /msg, and /tellraw commands
- A player cannot see any messages other player send
- A player cannot see text that other players sent via the /tell, /msg, and /tellraw commands
- A player can see anything put into the world by content creators (i.e. any message that is built into the world is still visible to the student)
- All code executed by the chat commands work

Thank you so much for all of the responses! Are we able to get the chat turned on if we turn it off and want it on at a later date?

Yes, you can re-enable chat in the future. You'll just need to send in a support request at that time.

Hello, I work in IT in a school district and just added Minecraft Education Edition to our roster of software. Is there a way that I can disable the chat feature that IT would have access to?

Hi Patrick Foltyn, I'll open a ticket for you and the support desk can help.
