Chromebook Update not installing

    Hi Bryn Lewis Jones

I've certainly noted this myself behavior on Chromebook myself, however the installation file is about the same size as for 1.14.

One thing to keep in mind is that Chromebooks do not have a great deal of local storage. We've found that a lot of our devices have filled up with local profiles over time, so we have a schedule for wiping them on the chromebooks, You'll need to ask your IT people to wipe profiles on the affected units, but it's very simple and easy to do through the GSuite console.

This will open up some room for Minecraft.

Thanks for the feedback Dan.  I understood our Chromebooks wiped the profile on sign-out, so I've contacted IT support to see if they have any ideas.

Did you ever get to the bottom of this Bryn? We have the same issue affecting schools in our area.

  • Hello David.

It was fixed at County level, but I'm not able to give you the specifics.

In response to my original query, County noted "an issue with Minecraft Education and how it is being deployed using the google admin account."

The fix meant that our Chromebooks no longer wipe the user details on sign-out, but I don't know any more.

I've emailed our IT services to ask if they can explain what they did and I'll post again with any response.

  • Here’s the explanation from IT about why settings were changed so that user profiles remained on devices after sign out:

To my understanding the reason we did this was because each time a user would log into the device, the profile was then wiped after they were done.
Each time a profile was wiped Minecraft was saving some data on the device’s cache, then it would repeat the process for the next user and so on. This caused the cache to become full and was causing multiple issues (such as the application not launching).
We had to change the policy to stop removing profiles so Minecraft would only install once per user and then stay there; this solved the issue of constant data being piled on top of each other without being removed/wiped which then resolved the issues that we were experiencing. So in short, stopping the profile wipe stopped the pile up of data in the cache which was causing the issue.

I can confirm that since this change, we’ve experienced no problems with running Minecraft on the Chromebooks.

    Hope this might help.

    Thanks Bryn,

We are having the same issues we have 400 Chromebook different models some with 2GB onboard storage some with 32GB onboard storage. Due to the small amount onboard we have had to have the policy of wiping profiles on exit for students. This has by the look above caused the issue. It's catch 22 isn't it as we find if more than a few students login to the Chromebook without having this policy the storage fills up then Minecraft wont work again? What's the answer outside of trying to replace 400+ Chromebooks with newer bigger storage?

Not wiping our chromebooks isn't really an option for us either. Too many students, too few devices.

My approach has been to get the students into the habit of exporting their worlds to Google Drive or OneDrive after each build session. I recognize it's not an intuitive process, but it has some significant advantages:

    1) Students have a backup of their world in the cloud (it's saved the project of quite a few students on a number of occasions).

    2) An opportunity to teach students a little about file management, cloud storage vs local storage and why backups are important.

    3) They can import the file onto another device.

I threw a little video of how to export files from a chromebook up on my YouTube channel here

We are using Lenovo 100e Chromebook 2nd Gen, they have 32GB of Storage however after a powerwash SYSTEM using 30GB? doesn't seem right? what chromebook are you's using what size is the system showing after powerwash? I've also gone into devicestorage and cleared cache didnt remove anything from "System"

For anyone who has this model I found it comes with out of the box application to make "Recovery USB" this has to be done to remove and free up space within system once we did that now system only taking up 13.9GB not 30GB space.

Thank you Paul for that great information! I had assumed that the power washing cleaned out files as well.

Thanks for that Bryn, very much appreciated.

Paul, are you referring to the Chromebook recovery utility chrome extension that creates a recovery USB drive? I've just tried using that extension to reinstall the OS from scratch and storage is still showing at 30+ GB.

Not the chromebook extension but the Lenovo built in recovery tool that was pinned to taskbar at the bottom, Think it had a wrench icon.

Once I ran it, used a flash drive it made the recovery media, then freed up over 17GB space on the machine, this then seem to deploy that change to then all the models in the school. Now I have 17GB free on all the models.

Dominick Powerwash didn't do much as most of the space on these models was used by the "SYSTEM" volume.
