syntax /setblock command_block [how do I include block data and commands?]
Ok, I know I can
/setblock command_block
And I know it should be possible to include block data and commands but I have been searching for hours and have not figured out the syntax to do it correctly.
I need to figure out what are the Minecraft Data Values for command blocks and the proper syntax of how to enter them.
Please Does anyone have a list and some examples.
first, how to set one with a command
how do I make sure it is pointing in the right direction
I also need to figure out the conditional/unconditional
Redstone/always active
execute on first tick
Delay in Ticks

Anyone? I've read that it is not possible in bedrock but then I guess I need to be educated about the syntax /setblock <position> <tileName> [tileData] [replace:destroy:keep] So the position and tileName are fine and I can place the command block no problem and I understand the replace:destroy:keep if I want to use it. BUT, What can go in [tileData] and how do I need to write it?

It can be hard to search for something when the words are common like "command" and "Block."
The slash commands aren't necessary except to get one:
/give @s command_block
If you stand in front of where you want it to point, it seems to work for me. Then I just place it.

Aleece Landis , tile data can be left 0 , it is used mostly to place colored blocks.(colored wool and colored concrete)

@@deborah alexander I don't have a problem getting a command block or using them. I was hoping to save myself time when building new lesson worlds by using a program in code builder to place the command blocks pre-populated with settings and commands since there are several things that I'm likely to want to add on a regular basis for certain types of lesson worlds.
@... Thanks for the info. Darn, I was really hoping I might be able to create a file that could place command blocks with their settings already in place. It is really tedious having to keep reinventing the block for each world.

Ahh. Okay, I never caught on to why you were trying so hard to use text commands, but now I get it! =]
I guess the approach I would use is to build what I want in the world by ordinary means, and then after determining what I want, I would catalog what is needed and decide if I can create is most easily with code or text commands.

Aleece Landis, I'm fairly advanced with Redstone and Commands and Command blocks and happy to provide examples and syntax. I've spend years cobbling together enough information to make things work in Minecraft Education Edition.
I've constructed quite a few activities and lessons with functionality built in and I have a couple with a whole slew of specific examples. I would be happy to share all of this material with you and help you with anything specific you're trying to do and save you a lot of time!

Dan Noble I have to admit. I have spent time looking at this now, and I'd be curious as well! I can put things inside of a chest, or place a command block in the direction I want with an agent, but I cannot find commands to manipulate the inside of a command block yet.

Dan Noble yes, interested in connecting. But I'm not wanting you to just Give or Create things for me. I actually want to learn HOW to do it myself so I can use the knowledge to expand MY capabilities to create new maps.
@deborah alexander I fear the problem lies in that additional information to manipulate the command block is NBT data and while Java minecraft allows access to the NBT data, apparently Bedrock does not. (I guess that is why one command block creations can exist in Java but won't work in bedrock.)
Now over in Bedrock I was testing the structure block and I was able to copy and paste a structure with a command block and the command did copy. SO if they ever fully implement being able to use structure blocks in education edition, we should be able to create our command block platform once and hopefully from there we could save that structure for use in future builds.
Now 2-3 years ago there were some global minecraft education mentors making videos and I saw one where there were schematics available to put into the world and they could be used for tests and quizzes in Minecraft edcuation but I never found how to use or access that functionality. EduElfie, I don't know if that is Stephen Elford or not posted a bunch of really helpful videos. And Chris Fuge was involved in one that I saw. Actually Mr Fuge provided me with a student plots world which was great, what I really need now is a tutorial about HOW he created it so I can understand and be able to apply the principals for future builds.
I think it might be really helpful to have a Technical Education Minecraft section (not technical problems) but advanced commands, coding and redstone help for aspiring map/lesson makers.
Also, what is the difference between a world file and a template file? How does one create a template file for their students.

Assuming that the limitations of Minecraft education will not allow you to create your command blocks through code or chat commands in the way that you would like, I would like to offer you a completely different take on how to create your world.
Remember that Minecraft worlds are utterly huge. What if you created your command structures and cloned them in different locations in a world? If you did that, you could have many different places in the world with the structures you want, but from the user experience they would only experience one of those places if you copy the world and created a new spawn point for that world. Just an idea.

Yes, my intent is to provide you with a 101 on command blocks, and resources/examples that would show you how to build your own rather than building it for you.
Personally I don't tend to rely very heavily on the coding agent while constructing functional activities and lessons. The coding agent is great for some limited applications, but isn't particularly useful for detailed setups. From my perspective, it's really meant as an introduction to coding (at which it excels at).
Structure block functionality unfortunately has not been fully implemented in Education Edition... so copying blocks and sequences requires a little more work.
And I would agree, I think there's a real need for a advanced building technique/command/redstone area on the site given how often I encounter people looking for more information.

lol I am pretty sure everyone here knows how I feel about school statup! I'm looking forward to the community having some fantastic reference links and lists with user generated tutorials and 'splains, as the gaming folks used to call them. The biggest limitation is the mess of adding images. But I do think this is the start of good stuff. =D

Hey all, I am happy to help where I can. I would like to highlight that you are unable to use NBT data as in Java to populate command blocks. That being said, you can set up functions that run thousands of commands off the one command block, and I run whole maps out of one command block now, rather than hundreds like I used to. This makes editing/refining way easier.
I am in the process of 'getting back into it' after a rough transition period a few years ago. There are some pretty neat projects I want to share that use this kind of tech. Happy to be involved in a connection/discussion for moving forward, it is this kind of discussion that has been missing from this community since its inception and one of the reasons I took a break. What I want to do is support those wanting to take it further than getting students to build. Let's get this happening!!

And I totally agree about the importance of providing educators more than just the basics. I realize for many just getting started is overwhelming already, but I also think there are plenty out there that would benefit from more advanced training.

!!! Awesome. Stephen Elford and Chris Fuge I just watched one of Elfie's videos from a couple years ago that you guys did explaining how to use the score board.
Elfie, I did finally realize that I could not place command blocks with the data inside. About all we can do with a setblock command_block here is say which way is up.
My main problem with trying to use functions is that in Education edition they don't really support custom behavior packs so don't really give instructions on how to do it. As far as I've been able to figure out, I can find some behavior pack that works in EE. deactivate it, delete it from storage, and with the original re name to a zip file, unzip, find the functions folder and put my own function file in it, then zip it back up and re.name it then import it.
And if I need to make any changes, I basically have to go through the whole process again which gets really tedious for testing.
AND, if using the function file is taking over most of the load of command blocks, I need to make sure any students downloading the world have that behavior pack installed.
Now I've just been stumbling through this on my own trying to glean information from web sites and YouTube so it could well be that it can be done much easier than this. So Please show me a better way.

Aleece Landis I am going to rock your world!! You can most certainly create custom BP's for M:EE. I think this video may help you get started with it (I only made it unlisted for you, it is not a polished video, but a twitch stream capture). If that doesn't really help reach out and we can make a time to get together to show you the workflow I use.
There are folders within the M:EE structure that even allow you to create a pack and not have it linked to a world making editing it way easier, but there are always ways and means to achieve your goals. Also, in answer to your previous question, and concern about students having the pack installed, if you package the world as a template with the BP in it, they will not have to worry about that. In my experience, as long as you tick the 'must have packs' in the world before exporting (which I am pretty sure is default once you add a BP), it normally includes them as well. This is my tutorial video on how to create templates and I am pretty sure it explains clearly what a template is.
I do all my editing in text, and then flip back into Minecraft to do my testing, trust me, it is way less convoluted than unpackaging and repackaging each time. You edit 'in' the world/pack folders and reload the world if no new files have been created, or restart Minecraft if you create new files.

Stephen Elford Yes Elfie you ROCK. I've been going through videos looking for tutorials but I had not found the Template tutorial so I needed that. And I'm definitely going to check the BP video too.
Also, you made one tutorial on resource packs and mentioned that you would make another tutorial that would get to sounds, did you ever do that one? I haven't found it yet if you have. And I am trying to set up a resource pack where I can put spelling words in as sounds so that the students need to name keys in an anvil to get through the spelling test.

Also, you have a bunch of videos using MCedit doing stuff like importing and exporting schematics and stuff. Does that still work in education edition now days? Those videos were from 2-3 years ago and I've heard MCedit is not longer updated or supported? I've tried using Amulet and I'm not entirely certain it is working, could just be that I had not generated enough of the worlds when I was trying to copy a structure from one world to another.

Thanks for putting in all the effort... they've been crucial to my gaining an understanding of a number of elements of Minecraft. Anyone, I want to add sounds in that I can access with the /playsound command (so I can have a button and command block or NPC play the sound on cue.) I'm not looking to replace sounds from the game or link the sounds to actions.
Any Idea how I can manage this?
I tried creating a resource pack but it doesn't seem to be working and all the tutorials I've found so far are for replacing existing sounds in the game with a different sound, which I would really rather NOT do if I can avoid it. If I put the whole year worth of words into a single pack it is going to be 576 words, I don't want to have to have to remember (have to create a database to look it up) what word replaced what sound. Even if I do it just one week at a time, that would mean creating a new resource pack each week.

Update to everyone, (this might actually belong in another thread?)
I have finally figured out a very basic resource pack to allow me to get sounds into minecraft to be able to /playsound the spelling words for a 2nd grade spelling curriculum.
Now I just need to figure out an assortment of ways they need to show that they can spell the word after hitting the button to hear the word. I figured I could give them an item to name in an anvil and then place in a chest or something, Perhaps also name animals or villagers with name tags. Anyone have other ideas of things they could do that can be detected as right/wrong? In order to move them on to the next word? I have 16 words per week so I want to make it a little creative and not have them doing the exact same 4 things 4 different times per week. It is likely to basically be the same set of activities each week though.

Aleece Landis I just tested an idea and it might work well.
You can use the nametag like you mentioned, and have the students use an anvil to "spell" the word and then place it on an animal. In that area you can also have a command block, either with a button or just on repeat, to check for that word:
/testfor @e [name=word]
Then you can have a second command block in the chain (set to conditional) and can use that to award them items, points, or even teleport them to a new area for another challenge.

Exactly what I was thinking Chris Fuge. I'm just trying to think of as many "variations" of that basic concept I can manage.
So things like name the tripwire hook whatever the word is and by having that you can walk into the next room, where perhaps you will get a piece of paper that you have to name the next word and by putting that in the chest you unlock the next place, where perhaps you have to name the cow. Does anyone know if you can detect or test for something written in a book placed on a lectern? (Hum, or maybe I need to save the books on the lectern for the harder words and allow them to choose the correct page and then have to click the button to have the choice checked.)
Anyone have some additional creative ideas for testing spelling? I know there is going to be a lot of naming items or name tagging entities but help me try to keep this from being too repetitive within the 16 words per week.
1-Name the hook to use as a key
2-Name the paper and place it in correct location

15-Choose correct sign to switch the lever on and then hit the button.

I think I'm gonna need a texture pack that will give me alphabet items that I can have them place in item frames or something.
Anyone know how to detect what is in an item frame? Would it be as easy as test for?
