Licensing options for public spaces
It's great to see that Minecraft: Education Edition is finally expanding Licensing to Camps and Clubs. However, the trend of associating all the logins and licenses to a particular user or email still doesn't work for public settings such as a public library. It would be great to see a way to tie the license to a specific device and to not need to login every time.
We are a public library with 20 public access computers. These computers are used by a variety of different users all day long 7-days a week. We would like to be able to provide access to Minecraft on these computers. There are children in our community who don't have access at home or school, some who have never had the opportunity to try it.There is the potential for some fun and educational programming that could be done after school or in the summer. For these types of programs we don't normally register specific kids as the attendance varies to much from day to day, and week to week. We also don't have the capacity to create emails for every kids who wants to participate in a program.
The standard Minecraft Java edition doesn't allow us any control over which servers users join, many of which contain problematic or inappropriate chat rooms. The School/Club licensing format does not work for a format like a public library where the users/participants vary. Whether we do a specific weekly club format or allow general play whenever we are open, the users are constantly changing. Assigning a license to a specific user does not work in this type of setting. We would want to assign the license to a specific PC instead.
The current work around to have each account change passwords regularly just doesn't work. During after school periods staff would have to be constantly going to computers and signing people in. Public library computers are often set up with PC login management software and things like Deep Freeze to maintain computers and restore them to the previous state after a user is finished to protect their privacy. This means the Minecraft account would not stay logged in between users.
