Hiding controls on screen

Is there a way to hide the controls that appear on the left side of the screen without hiding the entire HUD using the "Hide HUD" option in Video settings? It never used to appear all the time on my screen.

  Settings . . . Keyboard and Mouse . . . Hide Keyboard and Mouse Hints

   

  Took me awhile to find it too!
