How do I get Multiplayer to work when I'm logged in from home?
As COVID-19 concerns prompt school closures around the world, we realize that a large amount of educators and students are turning to remote learning to stay engaged and connected. View the How to Set Up a Multiplayer Guide to learn more.
Although the Multiplayer experience was designed and optimized for classroom use where all players are on the same network, Multiplayer across different internet connections is possible by making some changes to your home network configuration. Visit the How to Set Up a Multiplayer Game from Home Guide to understand how to host a game that players on other networks will be able to join.
Troubleshooting:
- Read the How to Set Up a Multiplayer Game from Home Guide to open port 19132 to network traffic.
- Connect directly to your modem with a network cable
- Try using a smartphone as a mobile hotspot
If these troubleshooting steps does not resolve your issue, please try contacting your internet service provider. We have seen that some ISPs block the type of network traffic needed for our multiplayer service to work.

It worked!! I guess it was the update to 1.14 that we did this week. I had a few students try to host worlds from home, and we were able to join them, with just a join code! I also opened up Minecraft on a second computer at home and had half my class in one world and the rest in the other, without port forwarding configured for the second computer! Next I want to try all of this from school, on multiple computers in my lab and see if I can assign different join codes to smaller groups of students...

I tried hosting some worlds from my school yesterday and was able to connect to one from home with a student account, with no port forwarding setup on the school computer. When I tried to join another computer hosting a world from school however, it put me back into the first world... then I started getting “unable to join world” messages. After restarting a few times I was able to get into the other world being hosted at school, but also kept getting error messages as well. Need to do some more troubleshooting for sure.

I've had connection problem in the past when trying to join one server after another. What should be done is to launch MEE, and join your server without starting / joining / creating any other world before. In other words, your server has to be the first world your connect after they launch the game. Also, in case students lose connection after being in a world, always instruct them to quit MEE and launch it again - my students couldn't reconnect without relaunching MEE. Let me know if this helps.

I’ve been trying restarting Minecraft as well as the entire computer and still having some problems. Will test more tomorrow with students.

Today went much better having students host the worlds for their group. We used channels in teams for each group to communicate while they played. One student from the group opened the world from their home and shared the join code for their other teammates (groups were 4-6 students). Then I was able to join each group as well using 6 of my classroom computers so I was able to be in the worlds with them. Worked perfectly and I love that it recognizes me as a teacher and gives me OP status. Even had a student try to take it away from me and they couldn’t!

Thanks for the update Chris, it's great to hear that all is going well! Did you find that the 1.14 update helped with connection issues? There was a bug fix for the issue that was requiring all the restarts to join different worlds. Let us know if your students are still having to restart.

My students are still having to restart Minecraft to join a different world. But I did test it from my laptop and I was able to join 5 consecutive worlds, hosted by students at home, without having to restart Minecraft. We are all on 1.14.31 so not sure why it would be different. One possibility is that our district likes to roll out a modified version of the software with updates disabled so they have more control over when updates are pushed out to student computers. I installed the 1.14 update from the Minecraft Education Edition site over summer.

Hi, I would like to share my case and experience with MC:EE multiplayer. Until last week my Minecraft Coding Club has been held in a classroom. Now, since stricter lockdown measures, we shifted to online teaching with Microsoft Teams. It really helps to have the same student account both for Teams and for MC:EE!
Today is the first online session with our 14 students who need join my server from their home. The server which I had with me in the classroom is connected to the internet.
But now the uncertainties beginn, due to the unreliable network code of this edition of Minecraft. Will all my students be able to join my server? What if two or three of my students get problems because of non-whitelisted URLs, port forwarding or firewall issues? Will this disqualify them from being schooled? Will troubleshooting with x students ruin my teaching? I don't hope so. I wonder shouldn't we better use the Bedrock or Java versions to guarantee the MC classroom for homeschooling? What shall I tell the parents about requirements for this software?
Thanks for taking note!

Hi Christoph Peters. I'm happy to provide some resources that should answer your questions here. We have a webinar series that answers a lot of the questions you have, providing alternatives to multiplayer and asynchronous learning. I strongly recommend watching a few of the videos linked here:
I also recommend doing another readthrough of our Multiplayer from Home guide:

I hope this helps!

Has anyone been able to host multiplayer worlds from home that people from outside your LAN can join when your home or some of your students ISP is XFINITY?
I've had difficulty getting Java and bedrock servers accessible by students/friends from outside our LAN before and I think the problem is XFINITY, Comcast has new security features that seem to make it very hit and miss as to if port forwarding will work or not and they don't seem to let me "whitelist" connections.

Update. I am on Comcast Xfinity internet with their new advanced security (where you have to log into their web portal to get access to their advanced stuff like port forwarding.) AND IT WORKS! I have had at least one student able to log into a world hosted by my at my home while he was also at home. Now will have to see if the rest can do it. Only a small group a few have been able to join worlds hosted on each others computers, three more students to get hooked up for this first trial group.

I've tried opening the port (Verizon router) as instructed but when I try to add the device the page just becomes unresponsive. Any suggestions?
I also have some security concerns about opening my firewall like this. Once the connection closes (ie, I end the game) what happens?0 -
i was wondering if there could be some better updates like neather or caves to do some exploring and teaching classes and could Mee could be updated to the updates on the other Minecraft editions

Since the new update almost about 80% of my students can't connect to my MC:EE host from home. I have 50+ students who regularly attend my MC:EE classes from home with iPads and / or Windows 10 PCs. Internet connections in general here in Germany are in good condition. Despite port 19132 forwarding configurations, several restarts of MC:EE (occasionally it worked after 2 - 3 trials and new join codes) and computer restarts only a few clients are able to connect to the host.
It has such an impact on my homeschooling connectivity that I had to cancel all my online-based MC:EE coding and teamwork classes. Luckily now we have summer season here ...
Before with version 1.14.50 I spent already numerous support hours to get online connectivity working for every parent household. Please, please fix these connectivity issues soon. The technology for multiplayer networking is there. I know dedicated servers for MC:EE are being under consideration by the dev team but an urgent hot fix might be needed.

Definitely, thanks Bryan. So Christoph Peters I've gone ahead and created a ticket for you. I definitely want to learn more about what's going on and resolve the issue here, so I'll get more info in a ticket. See you over there!
For anyone else having connectivity issues after the update, write in a ticket so we can see what's causing this. Thanks!0 -
