How do I get Multiplayer to work when I'm logged in from home?
As COVID-19 concerns prompt school closures around the world, we realize that a large amount of educators and students are turning to remote learning to stay engaged and connected. View the How to Set Up a Multiplayer Guide to learn more.
Although the Multiplayer experience was designed and optimized for classroom use where all players are on the same network, Multiplayer across different internet connections is possible by making some changes to your home network configuration. Visit the How to Set Up a Multiplayer Game from Home Guide to understand how to host a game that players on other networks will be able to join.
Troubleshooting:
- Read the How to Set Up a Multiplayer Game from Home Guide to open port 19132 to network traffic.
- Connect directly to your modem with a network cable
- Try using a smartphone as a mobile hotspot
If these troubleshooting steps does not resolve your issue, please try contacting your internet service provider. We have seen that some ISPs block the type of network traffic needed for our multiplayer service to work.

Hello! Today, students failed to connect to the teacher ... They did everything right, once again double-checked everything as you wrote, as it is written in the instructions. But no one could ... Children see the open world, but after trying to connect, a connection error flies ... What else could be the problem, how can I fix it?

Hi - we've seen the most success in connecting from different networks if the host is able to open port 19132. Take a look at this guide: https://portforward.com/minecraft/ to understand how to open a port.

Hi!
I opened the port in the Windows Firewall and on my router for port 19132( both tcp und udp). But it still doesn't work, if I check the port, the error message is: "the port is not open or not reachable."
How can I fix it? Is it a problem in general or is it a problem just on my computer?
Thx!

Hello Carrie, can I run Minecraft Education from Azure? I am having the same issue as Daniela now.

I've been hosting a distant MEE server from MacBook for students for a while now. I had the same problem as you - some students would connect, others would not. In my case, the reason why some students couldn't connect was that they would launch MEE, enter a different world e.g. single player game, etc. then quit the world and try to connect to your sever. What they should do instead is to launch MEE, and join your server without starting / joining / creating any other world before. In other words, your server has to be the first world they connect after they launch the game. Also, in case students lose connection after being in a world, always instruct them to quit MEE and launch it again - my students couldn't reconnect without relaunching MEE. Let me know if this helps.

Thanks @... - this is correct! There is a known issue that you've described very well related to joining, leaving and then attempting to join another world. This should be fixed in our next release.

Phillip Rustamov and Daniela Senfter we are exploring short and long term solutions to allow multiplayer across networks and hope to have some recommendations over the next few weeks. The current Minecraft: Education Edition multiplayer experience was optimized for use in the classroom over the same network, and we hadn't considered multiplayer across networks as a primary scenario. With our current situation that has changed and we are actively thinking about how to address this.

Penny thanks for your response. Port forwarding stills works as a solution to multiplayer game across networks, correct?
1 -
@... yes, we have found that hosts that are able to forward a port have success with other players joining their world. Unfortunately we are hearing that it's a fairly complex process and many of our players are not comfortable configuring their routers or are unable to successfully get the port forwarded. So the long and short term solutions I mention above would be in addition to the current peer-to-peer connection.

Hi, I was hoping to setup a world and a task then let students complete this when it suits them. I don’t want to have to be logged in all the time just now and again to check in . Is this possible?
1 -
Hello Susan Lister, to the best of my knowledge, you need to be actively hosting a world for students to be able to log in and complete tasks. Our students are currently involved in building a virtual school campus in MEE, and I need to host the world for every building session. I wonder if MEE has an intention to develop a long term solution for hosting a stand-alone MEE server.

Thanks @Evgenii
That would explain the issues we were having. It’s not really ideal during the current circumstances. Lots of students are sharing devices in their family and can’t always access at a specific time. I really hope they create a way to do this otherwise I can’t imagine I’ll be using it. Even during normal times it’s the type of task that students would enjoy continuing at home in their own time.1 -
Susan Lister, well I guess at this point we can only add our voices to many others asking for a permanent MEE server solution.

My students and I have been experiencing connections issues lately i.e. students were connecting to my server from a different network just fine for the past two weeks, but then last Wednesday it stopped working. While the majority of the students couldn't connect, there are 2 or 3 students who still can. Has hosting a world for other networks been working well for you lately?

Solved the connectivity issues by rebooting the router through router settings. Students successfully joined the world.

Hello, friends. I solve the problem with multiplayer log in.
All you need its use a VPN service, and BINGO, all students can stay together in the some world
:)
1 -
Magno Pinheiro you don't have to use VPN to allow all students to connect remotely to MEE server.

Evgenii Permiakov Yes i need use a VPN to play.
I am wait about 35 days to use.
Only with VPN service i can play with my students, every students was in yours houses.
And we only play together with a VPN service, i made a new fresh install of windows 10 and MC:EE to play.

I don't know how to restart (MEE)

@... by restarting Minecraft, I meant quitting / closing the game entirely and launching it again.

I try but if i join people world with add on it doesn't work

Evgenii i wrote about MC:EE.
I only get sucess with a VPN service, only.

After first experiencing these issues when we first started learning remotely 4 months ago, I came back to this today as we have restarted home learning again and after following the guide to configure my router, forwarding ports and static IPs etc we still had the same issue.
Has it actually been rectified?Thanks

AI use a VPN service, i used here in my house and all students can multiplay, any VPN serviçes, first log in in vpn service, second open minecraft education edition and create the world. tks.

Does anyone have any advice for setting up two host computers from the same network? I have classes with more than 30 students, but can only have 29 in the world with me...
I have successfully setup my router to allow port forwarding through port 19132 and students can join my world, but I would like to have another computer running a second world so I can split my class into two groups. (I'd even like to do this from school with even more groups so I can have smaller teams working, but the district is not allowing port forwarding at this time).
The problem is that I cant find a way to setup port forwarding for more than one device. If I try to use port 19132 with another IP address for my second computer, it says the port is already being used. If I try to use a different port number (tried 19131 and 19133) it doesnt work, even when I have students manually type in the IP address and port number, instead of using a join code.
Any suggestions?

I am glad to see you got the initial ports open and good to go. The problem with having multiple is that port you opened is on your router, not the computer. So when you open these it opens a gateway through your router for your students to connect to. With the current standard set up of the game's multiplayer you would basically have to have multiple routers (which obviously is not ideal for home use). My suggestion would to reach out to any of the parents of the students to see if they would allow for them to open their routers port and they would be able to host the second world. Not ideal and I understand and this is something I will definitely pass on to the development team as a potential upgrade.

Thank you Adam, I'll try a second router setup and see if that works.

Solved my issue of students not being able to connect by getting something called CG-NAT turned off by my ISP.
Apparently if you're on the NBN in Australia some providers have this turned on and it stops the port forwarding. You just have to call them up and they turn it off straight away.
Hope this might help someone

Thank you so much for the comment and suggestion! Here in the US we have a similar issue where some of the ISPs will lockdown the router and you have to call them to get ports open. Really great post and we appreciate all of you helping each other!
