Chromebook Code Builder freezing on execute

Using the lastest version of MEE (1.20.12). Brand new Acer Chromebooks in a school managed setting. 

On SOME of the Chromebooks (which are all identical),  when you press the green triangle to execute your code, the red square shows up and never goes away. Code never executes. 

I had a similar problem with older Chromebooks in a workshop this summer and was told it had something to do with how Chromebooks sandbox different applications. So somehow MEE was conflicting with Code Builder. 

Also, every student is on the same wifi. 

Is there some workaround for this?  Makes it impossible to use Code Builder if everyone can't just get their code to execute. TIA.
