v1.19 and v1.20 multiplayer disconnects, join failures, and lag after certain number of players connect.
Hey there,
We heard a lot of feedback about how version 1.19 affected multiplayer stability. We've made many initial improvements and we're looking to continue improving multiplayer performance, but I wanted to create this post for users who are still experiencing issues that did not happen in 1.18 and began in 1.19 and continue still.
Issue Description: After a certain number of users connect to the host (this number will vary based on host device specs), users in the world begin experiencing lag, inventory access issues, and/or disconnections. In addition, new users may be unable to join the host.
Our Findings: After reproducing the issue locally and investigating, we've found that the issue arises when the host device can no longer process the number of players in the session (typically due to CPU or RAM maxing out or poor internet connection).
We found that issue did happen in 1.18 as well, however multiplayer hosting was more efficient in the older version and thus allowed for more players to connect to the host device before it got overloaded.
Moving Forward: As with any app, our minimum required specs will increase over time. However, we know that schools tend to have lower spec devices and that the difference in hosting capability between 1.18 and 1.19 was substantial. We're looking for ways to improve the experience of multiplayer to allow for a greater number of players even on low spec devices, closer to how things were in 1.18.
Troubleshooting: Troubleshooting should focus primarily on the host device's performance. View this guide dedicated specifically to this issue for our troubleshooting recommendations (will update with more info over the coming week).
If your issue matches the above description and you are unable to host many players without issues on a higher spec device, please let us know what device make/model/OS (or more advanced device specs) you're using for your host device. Also, let us know how many players are able to connect before you begin experiencing issues.
If your issue does not quite match the above description, please submit a ticket to my team or create a new thread for your technical issue so we can troubleshoot accordingly. Thank you.

I experienced the same problem but with the version 1.20.13.
Issue Description: We figured out that having 20 or more students in the same server would cause the game lagging (access to the world denied to new users, inventory issues, ecc...). The computer hosting the game had a RAM of 8GB.
Solution: We upgraded the network infrastructure by installing a new set of cables and utilizing a more robust central machine where all the LAN cables converge. This noticeably alleviated the performance issues experienced though having 20 students in the same server still diminishes the game performance to some extent.
Suggestions: If you experience anything similar try to see if you can add more RAM to the hosting computer, or contact the school administration to explore the possibility of upgrading the internet connection.
I hope this can be of help. Mine on!0
