Chromebook Minecraft EDU Freezing on Load
My school district just received a batch of HP 11MK G9 EE edition Chromebooks. And for some reason we are seeing all of them consistently either freezing on a faded Mojang screen or just a blank black one.
And admittedly I am at a bit of a loss.. so far I have tried..
- Different accounts/devices but the issue is consistent
- Tried updating to the lastest Chrome OS version but that didn't help and the version that comes on the new ones by default is similar to the 'older' devices ie. they are all running 107 yet the older ones work while these do not.
- Attempted a full powerwash
- Attempted a full usb restore
- Hot spotted the device directly to my phone incase there was a district security issue
- Joined the Beta program for Minecraft EDU hoping there might be an update/fix for it to work
And I did find this in the technical area in a support post that was a month old..
Description |
Some users on ChromeOS v104 and higher may experience app freezing on launch. It may show the red Mojang screen or a very dark version of it. |
Status |
Working to resolve |
Workaround |
None |
But right now I am at a loss.. I have new chromebooks that can't run it and older ones that can and the school is getting a bit frustrated. So I am reaching out to the community here hoping someone has found a fix ( back door or otherwise ) to get this going.
Thanks!

Hi Penny - Thank you for the response I appreciate it though admittedly based on my testing so far I left with questions regarding the OS as well .. case and point these are the OS versions on the models I have been examining.
HP Chromebook 11MK G9 EE - 107.0.5304.110 ( out of the box )
HP Chromebook 11 G6 - 107.0.5304.110 ( has obviously been updated over time )
The 11MK has the lockup/failing issue described above yet the G6 which has the exact same OS runs perfectly fine. At the moment I am assuming that either it is a hardware change/issue or whatever updates were applied to the older device/os did not change a particular driver ( video? ), software package, or setting etc. and as a result of having it still works where the G9 fails on load.
Please let me know if I can provide any further testing or assistance with this as the school was already in the middle of a project when the devices were swapped leaving them a bit frustrated.

Thank you so much for the extra information. I'll pass this on to our engineering team.

Also doesn't work on the HP Chromebook X360 11MK G3 - Chome 91.0.4472.167 to 108.0.5359.75 (Official Builds, 32-bit OS and aarch64 processor)
As requested I have tried to roll back the os with no difference. MCEE has been tested with and without playstore beta in windowed and fullscreen mode. I don't have access to android debugging on this Chromebook (school policies.)
I don't know if this would be possible but what if the issue was MC checking for which driver to use, loads aarch64 drivers, and it can't run because the OS is 32-bit instead?

any updates please?

The current update is that the issue comes from the OS and client communication. We are working on this, and a fix has been found. We are trying to deploy it through a hotfix, but users may need to wait until Google releases its next OS update which will have the fix included.

Is there any more information that could be released about the issue? Was the bug anything like what I was saying? I only ask because if I end up seeing a problem like this again on other applications it would be cool to help fix it faster.

Hey Nathanial,
At this time unfortunately no further information. We will need to stay tuned for a patch from our end and/or Google's.
Thanks so much for your patience!

The most recent OS chrome update has just been released today but it hasn't fixed the issue

Hey Rea,
Sorry to hear and thanks for the info!
At this time we do not know which patch will fix / when it will come out. We do know Minecraft: Education Edition and Google teams are working towards a fix for this issue.

Hello, is there any new updates? Thank you.

I have of course been following this thread but didn't have a whole lot to report..
Like Rea Retarc I can confirm that the latest google OS update does not appear to have resolved the issue. At least on any of the units I have tested.
I am sure having to try and co-ordinate fixes/updates between the Google and Minecraft EE support teams is not easy by any stretch but given that this issue is quite literally months old I have to admit I am finding the lack of progress rather frustrating. Particularly as our district keeps buying more new equipment and can't use what is for many of the Div 1 sites a 'key' feature.

Hey Daren,
Sorry to hear you are running into some issues.
We just released a new version of Minecraft: Education, let us know if that works for you at all! We do have reports of 1.18.45 working now for other Chromebook users with the bug.

Hi Danny,
Thanks for that information I tested it late yesterday and at least so far I can confirm that in my tests your new version does seem to resolve the issue. This is great news so thank you to you and your team.
