Dedicated Server System Requirements
Our minimum operating system and hardware requirements for Dedicated Servers are:
| Operating System | Windows 11 (any version) Windows 10 (1703 or later) Windows Server (2016 or later) Ubuntu (18.04 or later) Other Linux Distributions are not officially supported - Use at your own risk. |
| CPU | Intel or AMD CPU with at least 2 or more cores. |
| RAM | 1GB or more. |
Tips:
You'll want to scale these specifications up as you increase your player count.Unlike the Minecraft Education Client, running Dedicated Server inside of VMs is supported!
Additionally, your server can be hosted either with local on-premises hardware, or in the cloud through a Virtual Private Server (VPS) provider like Microsoft Azure, Amazon Web Services (AWS), or similar, as long as they meet the above specifications.
Do I need a computer with server-grade hardware to run a Minecraft Education server?
No. You can run the server software on any machine as long as it meets our system requirements! Bear in mind, however, that other tasks running on your host device may impact performance.
Can I run Dedicated Servers inside of Virtual Machine (VM)?
Yes! Unlike the Minecraft Education client, running Dedicated Servers inside of Virtual Machines is supported, and even recommended. The VM provider you use (such as Hyper-V, VMWare, etc.) is up to you. Just be sure that your VM has network connectivity, has the hardware requirements stated above, and is setup to allow external connections. Our team cannot support issues with your Virtual Machine itself.
Do I have to run my server in a cloud environment?
No! You can run Minecraft Education servers locally on your existing hardware! As long as your machine meets our System Requirements. However, running locally may require some network configuration to allow the relevant ports to be open to external connections.
